    gs850gl first gear grinding?

just took my 82gs850gl out for its maiden voyage in who knows how long and downshifting to a stoplight anything at or over 20mph it will not go into first gear with the cluch
fully depressed it grinds and will not engage

anything under 20mph it really clunks into gear but engages all the other gears are smooth

I changed the final drive and secondary drive oils they were both very rotten and sludgy.

i cleaned them out with a bit of fresh gas and let them dry before refilling with fresh gear oil that I plan to change again soon to remove any rotten oil/gas contamination.

I'd recommend you redo the clutch adjustment to start with

Why are you downshifting into first at 20mph? I'm usually downshifting into 2nd or sometimes even 3rd at that point.

You could still have a cable issue. But my 850's tranny grinds something fierce going into 1st if I just pull in the clutch at speed and step down through the gears without releasing the clutch in between. This is not how it's meant to be ridden. If not doing engine braking, at least let out the clutch a bit between each downshift.

That's a good way to lock the rear up.
