GS1000 clutch rattle noise goes away when hot

Hi Folks, having read a lot of posts on clutch rattle I know I have some work coming.

The question I have is whether anyone can help determine what work

My clutch rattle reduces radically when the bike warms up properly, so I am wondering if this is just a loose nut (I have an APE replacement coming) or whether this is symptomatic of a clutch rebuild being required?

I have no history for the bike so have no idea of whether the clutch has had any work.

I will try sticking my finger into the casing to see if I can find any 'wobble' but I am thinking if it's small enough to close up when hot then it might be hard to detect

Also I would appreciate knowing if this symptom pinpoints a particular issue as then I know what I should prepare for

    Thanks guys

You may not need to go poking fingers in there. Pulling the clutch and/or rocking the bike back and forth in gear could tell a lot.

When the bike is running there is no significant change when you pull the clutch or engage a gear or bring it to the biting point - The noise is coming from the clutch cover area, I can feel the knocking by holding the clutch fork

I was thinking of doing it with the bike stopped and the oil filler open. You might see the basket try to come with the plates when you pull or if the primary gears are helical which I suspect they are a loose basket will shift in and out as you go back and forth in gear.
Sound like you're going to have to go in there anyway as I can't see rattling being sorted from the outside.

I think I'm try the nut first and give it an oil change, if it still rattles then I know it's the basket and I can do that over the winter time in the garage - hoping like last year that the poor weather arrives early next year and I can put a few more miles on the bike
