I run the Total mineral 20w50 in my GS450 as well, and the gear changes are beautiful and rides great.
However as the GS650 was sitting unused for several months, I would say the oil I replaced with this new heavier oil is causing the trouble for cold starting, so I will replace it with motorcycle oil I already have (Castrol 4T 10W-40 semi synthetic) and see how that goes.
Now I know that it was oil drag on the clutch plates, the last time I started it up, I pulled the clutch in during warm up which helped get the oil in between, and it was a lot less of a clunk going into first.
