    1982 GS1100 base gasket

I could use some help. I've been having compression issues so I pulled the head and cylinders. The head gasket was fine but there was no base gasket on the cylinders. I also had tons of grit/grime/garbage on the inside cylinder studs. I'm guessing the entire base gasket couldn't have just disappeared so can I assume the PO assembled the engine without one? There was a lot of burnt on oil where the cylinders meet the block; would the lack of gasket explain this? Would this have effected compression? Thanks for your help.

Base gasket missing would not cause the compression to be bad unless it allowed the valves to come in contact with the pistons. Would cause a massive oil leak though. Make sure the "missing base gasket" isn't stuck to the cylinders. They can become one with the cylinder block over the years.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

I'm sure its not. The top of the block & bottom of the cylinders was all metal without any dead remains.

compression issue is above the piston rings - not having a base gasket is a trick to get more compression even if it leaks some oil .

so move on and measure or inspect the top piston ring end gap, cylinder distortion or cylinder to piston clearance - and put liquid into your ports to see if the valves are sealing
SUZUKI , There is no substitute

The top piston ring end gaps are: #1 .3, #2 .3, #3 .28, #4 .35 The pistons are all at 71.8, the cylinder to piston clearances are .15 or .20 as measured with a feeler gauge. I'm waiting for an inside caliper to measure cylinder distortion. Ring thicknesses are all within parameters except one that is .05 too small.

              Any thoughts?

              Thanks for your help.
