Aftermarket source for new Piston rings

Can't seem to find any aftermarket suppliers for std. size rings for an 850, I've used the search function and scowered the internet high and low but can only seem to find OEM rings through the dealer, over $50can. a set at my dealer!

Ebay was of no use either as our Canadian dollar is in the ****ter right now!

Anybody know of other brands, i.e. Nippon-NPR, Hastings, ....etc?

    Cheers

I was looking at this recently, and like you, only found 1mm oversize - which were quite cheap, really. But then the cost of the rebore and new pistons makes it not so cheap.

It's quite frustrating for such a popular and common bike to have no aftermarket support for internals. Gasket sets, seals, carb kits no problem, why no pistons and rings aside from Oem?

I think Sudco may list them? I know they did for the 1000.

I would rather trust my bike to a technician that reads the service manual than some backyardigan that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix things.

          Here you go http://www.sudco.com/Catalog37Digita...ml/page51.html

all you need to do is find a Sudco dealer in your neck of the woods. I know British Cycle down here is, I buy from them for my Sudco needs.

They only list 0.5 oversize, kinda of stupid since you can't get 0.5 oversize from Suzuki anymore, only 1.0 over that I'm aware of, but thanks for looking

You can get your cylinders honed o/s to fit those rings. Or you can grind the ring ends to fit your cylinder, which is the reason and the purpose for .5mm o/s rings.

OS rings are for use on OS pistons. I wouldn't use them on standard size pistons although some people do so.

Looks like cruzinimage_co1484 sells aftermarket rings for the 850. Dirt cheap. Lots of folks using their big bore kits with decent results. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUZUKI-GS850...dVTqBV&vxp=mtr

BTW, I just spent $50/hole for rings when rebuilding my Kawasaki. Suzuki parts are cheaper (in the USA anyway).

By the time you convert $39.95us. a set it actually comes out cheaper buying them from my dealer in can. dollars....Unless he's selling 4 sets for $39.95 but that would be too good to be true and the price probably reflects the quality.

I've heard of people grinding down their rings but that's a question to ask my machinist. I personally wouldn't grind down 0.5 oversize to fit the std. pistons but like I said that's a discussion to talk about with my machinist.

Anybody else have a "secret" source for std. 850 rings aside from the dealer?

It is a pretty common and accepted practice. But to each their own, just saying it is an option.

I would spend the few $$ and get the proper ones, IF your bores are standard, this is when the .5mm o/s comes in handy. If the bores are just over standard then you would be better off with the 1st o/s rings ground to fit. If that is not for you then o/s pistons are the only option as going with standard is mute.

I disagree with using OE rings on standard pistons and bore. If you have a respected reference stating it's acceptable to do so I'd love to read it and educate myself otherwise. Please provide a link.

Like I said, it's just weird that there are not a lot, if any, aftermarket ring manufacture's for the std. size. I plan on bringing my cylinder's and piston's to a machinist and get his input.

If the spec's are out on the cylinder's and I do need the next o/s then obviously that will be a wiseco kit but that's not in the funds for this winter.

The std. 850 piston's show almost no wear on the skirts and no excessive blow by past the 2nd ring. I didn't pay anything for the 850 engine so no loss their but with a first newborn on the way coming this summer, funds don't look too good, lol

I used to work at CP Pistons so have experience in this. Do NOT use oversize rings!! The ring tension to the cylinder is higher & will damage the cylinder walls & the rings with too much pressure. Do what you want but I'm telling you the truth.

They are worth it, if that helps! :-)

I bought mine for my 1100 last year when the Cdn dollar was good, no way now would I buy across the border with the exchange.
