    16 Valve adjustment question

I have done the 8 valve several times, this is my first go at 16.

I have the motion pro tool and tappet style gauges in .004 and .005. I plan on setting clearance at .004.

My question is on setting the clearance. Assuming that the current clearance is less than .004, can I back out the adjustment screw, place the .004 gauge in location, snug it upon the gauge, remove gauge....done?

IIRC you have to do a little trial and error till you get the hang of it. I think the gap will open (i.e. loosen) when you tighten the lock nut so you have to give a little opposite turn to the knob to avoid the effect. I hold the adjusted knob with a pair a of pliers.

I usually make sure that 0.004" is semi loose but that when I try and slide in 0.005" it does not go in. If the 0.005" goes in too much then you know you have the 0.004" too loose.

Perfect, the pliers is a must. I like adjusting the 16 over the 8. I will double check clearances before buttoning it up, but I am pretty sure they all stayed put the first time around.
      Thanks.

It also helps if you have TWO sets of feelers, to keep the rocker from twisting sideways when you check one valve.

I guess I tighten with the feeler remover, but do go back and forth to make sure both clearances are the same using both feelers (0.004" and 0.005").

Leaving the feelers in you are presumably putting loads against the feelers eventually flattening them.

I adjusted one at a time, did I miss something?

If there is any play in the pivot area on the rocker, when you set the clearance on one valve, the other one will be less than what you think it is. When you check the second valve, the rocker will pivot back the other way, lessening the clearance on the first one.

Checking with two feelers is more like checking under actual operating conditions.
