That 's the worst of it ... and let me tell you she did not make a weird noise - only thing I noticed was it slipping and shifted a little notchy.
these GS bike are made tough - and nothing in the oil filter cavity - it all stayed in the clutch chest and made some scratches .....SUZUKI , There is no substitute

beware, she gave no warning
nope not my track bike just a street bike, ( got 12 ) regular low compression 1260 not abused , well a wheelie here and there and some 8~9K rpm fun runs
I was always a little afraid of this happening and thought it would sound like some dice in a blender. lots of noise .. SOME KIND of noise - maybe lock the rear wheel up - nope nothing at all - she was just running at 120 mph happy as a clam. If I were not a mechanical weirdo I would have kept riding it and just babied it until my new EBC clutch springs arrived. really it gave no warning - I was surprised as all heck when I got it opened up . and the basket looked great when I installed it just a few miles before. I have some ugly baskets this one passed my visual inspection.
I run good silencers and value quiet power, the clutch only slipped a little, over 8000 on a long stretch mater of fact I was hooting around popped a couple wheelies , it stood right up without using the clutch , just before I decided to pop open the clutch cover.
wanted to share with the community my experience because I can't count how many times I used the weak clutch routine as a buying leverage to get it cheaper and selling leverage to sell for more .. basket this basket that .... well here is my first and I am going to display it with my other parts in the hall of shame ! don't know about you guys but I'm proud of my glorious ruined parts.
bone up !! this is probably a best case scenario AND yours is probably going to pop soon too.SUZUKI , There is no substitute

all I have to say is DAMN! at least the majority of the mess stayed contained. I had a flexplate on my 72 gmc give out, along with the trans. the way the flexplate broke, it made it look like mickey mouse. so I kept it as garage art. i'll post a photo when I get home

Ok all of you 1100/1150 guys out there! THIS is why we do NOT use a stock, unmodified clutch hub on anything with ANY kind of power!!! I put heavy duty hubs in even my STOCK motored bikes, just for this reason! The thicker backing plate & heavier springs in the heavy duty kits keep all the parts where they are supposed to be! Glad you caught it before it got ugly Jeff!!!

Tripp,
Had a similar failure on one of my 1150's. Bent shifshaft and a junk fork also, so you got by cheap.

I ran a stock one on purpose to push it past the limit on this engine to inspect the failure and post it here.. And like I said before I expected to hear it when it failed , as 1 big crunch or crash. Hell Guys I have sawed a few engines in half and rode thru the oil at over 100 mph!! and you will never forget the sound of all that going on at once
So that concerns me because I do not actually know if it failed right before I opened it up or sometime earlier - the slipping was faint and just barely beginning probably a month ago - high gear roll on just gave a hint of rpm increase without acceleration - old fibers old springs and good steels - all disposable for experience sake - now if I could not tell -= think about a non experienced guy worried about cam chain noise or top end tapping ? - this was a silent killer .not only surprising but very concerning.
I have gorilla baskets and heavy duty backing plates on my powerful stuff - and my slider basket is very stout too first thing I always do - and now guess who will be calling APE. this guy.
the flex plate? yeah I have a friend got his foot cut off from a hi dollar flex plate and no SFI blast plate.... Drag racers are like test pilots.SUZUKI , There is no substitute

Can anyone explain the sequence of events for this failure?
We mostly all have some lose backplate springs in our road bikes. But how does one actually get out of the backing plate? And in this case how did 4 all come out at once?
BTW you should really have tried a little harder. My PO managed to mangle a clutch basket down to this size of part:
And it took cylinder liner with it too:
