1982 GS650G Final drive, swing arm.

    Hi,
Sure would like some input on inspecting my final drive unit, swing arm bearings, and driven joint. In the process of taking it all apart and was wondering if the oil seals are leaking on the final drive by the drive gear coupling and drive shaft coupling, can I replace those without taking the unit apart. Also should I replace the drive cushions behind the driven joint? What do most of the long time members use to keep rubber components pliable after 30 years of use.
    Thanks Mike K

If you are set on pulling it apart, might as well replace the swingarm bearings. The weak link in this drive system (esp in 82 models) is the splined hub in wheel, so inspect in carefully. See pic .rest of unit is robust. Make sure the bolt holding u-joint on hub is tight. Does it appear to have any leaks now?

      Thanks,
Are you referring to the bolt by the transmission or the one by the final drive unit.

I meant the bolts holding the u-joint flanges together. If it's not leaking, leave the pumpkin alone. But inspect that wheel hub spline very carefully -no signs of grease could mean trouble.
