GS850G 1981 Cam Chain Question.

Hello, I am currently preparing to rebuild my 81G, during this build I will be replacing the cam chain, tensioner etc etc. Can anyone inform me if the Cam Chain is a continuous link chain or can it be separated for the install? If its a continuous link, is it acceptable to break the chain and install a master link? Obviously if the chain can be broken for the install I won't need to pull the lower casing apart to install it, which will save me money and time.

The original chain is continuous.

Can you run a master link? Yes. But some knowledgeable builders will shame you. Same goes for using a rivet link, only the shame isn't as bad.

BTW, the chain tensioner rarely "wears", other than the seals on the inside. The tensioner shoes on the other hand rub on the chain so there may be some were there.

Regarding the chains, they typically run the life of the engine (more than 100k miles). You might want to measure the wear using the method shown in the factory service manual and then judge if you need to change the chain.

The previous owner of the bike must have had some work done to it, when they did, how long ago I don't know, they locked the Cam Chain tensioner into place to remove everything, when they reinstalled they didn't release the tensioner and the cam chain has been slapping around inside the casing etc hence it needs replacing. Thanks for your info.

I would still measure it and not assume that it is bad. It could be slapping around simply because of a loose tensioner, not because it has "stretched". (Chains don't really stretch)
