    Engine number question

I've just picked up a GSX750 engine (early 16 valve) for spares - excellent internals so I'm guessing a very low mileage engine. It's definitely a 750 - stamped 747 cm on the cylinders etc but I've just noticed the engine number which is GS40X -111062. I thought that meant it's a 400 - which it certainly isn't. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

75 PC50 - the one with OHV and pedals...
75 TS100 - being ridden (suicidally) by my father

According to the chart at Z1, the (US-spec) 750s had engine prefixes of GS75X-xxxxx or R701-xxxxx.

They have no information on a 4-cylinder smaller than 550, so you will have to search in a market that actually had those bikes available.

Possibly an engine replaced under warranty ?

Does it look like it's been restamped ? All sorts of possibilities if it does....

Thanks for the thoughts. Our 750s were also stamped GS75X.... as is the number on the engine in my bike. I've no idea of the history of the engine, I just bought it on a flier (it looks like a cracking deal for £30 with zero wear anywhere that I can see) and the numbers do look like they were stamped in the factory. Maybe the guy who normally put the 750 numbers on was on holiday and they gave the task to the bloke from the 400 line.....
