My 79 does the same thing. I guess it wants to be a 2 stroke engine. Actually it's more like a quart + a half pint for every 10 gallons of gas which only now is getting me around 400 miles.

My guess is the valve seals are probably like rock hard and I plan on tearing it down soon to replace them. Hopefully that will slow the consumption a bit.

180 km/hr with a Vetter, you need to come to one of the rally's this year, one of our members is infamous with his 850 and full Vetter gear.

Both boots were getting coated in the stuff to the point where the right boot slipped on the road at stop lights. My jeans and the back tyre knew about it as well. Everywhere I went I left spots on the floor within seconds of stopping.
Since sorting it out the consumption looks more like a litre per 4000 miles.
How you can have that level of loss with no external signs is a mystery. Are you sure a 'friend' isn't coming over at night and removing some
Out of interest what oil are you using ?

Lol....yeah wouldn't put it past him....I'm running Rotella 15-40 dino.

This one also has full Vetter crap on it.....the PO bought it that way from new...even has a working tape deck, lol....but for some reason I like it this way. I guess it's because I can actually go somewhere on it. I shouldn't really worry about the oil consumption. I can fit about 3 cases of it in the trunk, side cases, fairing pockets, behind the lowers..haha.

On a little different note, is there a way to change the valve stem seals without removing the head on the 79 GS1000? I did that on my 79 Goldwing using compressed air and it worked fantastically...if that is even a word. There was a great post on on of the Goldwing forums....there's gotta be one on here somewhere....

There used to be a thread on here about steve's valve spring depressor that he made from pvc. I searched for it today but could not find it.
This should be helpful for replacing your valve seals.
                    Anybody know where it is?

BTW My 850 used 3 quarts during the 1200 mile John Day trip last year. My Bandit with a VIN from the bad piston batch, doesn't use any. The 1150 smokes at startup but don't have enough time on it to say about oil consumption.

Yes, there is a thread on here on how to change the valve seals without taking the head off. I could search for it but I'm too lazy, maybe someone else can post the link to it?

Here is a pic of the 79 Gs1000. It cleaned up pretty well...feeling a bit naked without the lowers on.
