    Washers inside stator cover Gs1100

I have a 1980 Gs1100. I am polishing the case covers and after I removed the stator cover, 2 identical washers fell out of the bottom. Where do I put them back when I assemble the bike? Thanks.

They might be from the gear spindle between the starter motor pinion and the starter clutch ring. There are two on the 850, front and back and they tend to fall of on dis- or reassembly.
Welcome to the forum btw and in case you haven't yet found it http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

You need to post a picture or measurements to aid the guesses. Try starter gear shims?

Those are for the starter gear, one goes on each side of the gear

That's it. Thanks a bunch dude. I also had a bit of oil in my stator cover. Is that normal?

Got it figured out. I also found some oil in my stator cover when I took it off. Is that normal?

Yes. The stator is in the same space as the crank. If the o-ring at the front of the starter motor fails you will have engine oil coming out into the starter motor recess. When I'm working in there I put the near side of the main stand on a piece of 2x4. Keeps the oil over the other side so I don't have to drain it.
Depending on how you look at it the stator is oil cooled or it's an oil heater. That leads on to the debate about the relative merits of series or shunt regulation.

What Brendan is trying to say is he stator is oil cooled so oil in there is what is supposed to be seen.
