    This came out of my oil when I drained it

    Is this some internal component that's come loose, or something that was inadvertently dropped into the oil at some point?

          Positive that's part of a bearing cage. Not good !
          My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Project bike 79 GS1000N

                Thanks. I have a spare engine, so I guess I'll swap it in. I probably should have done a rebuild on the spare last winter...

                  Doesn't look like any bearing cage housing to me. Looks like it use to have two mounting holes with one missing part of it. More like a metal clamp. The problem is I don't think I've ever seen anything like that inside an 850. Might have been severely distorted while bouncing around, but can't imagine what it could have been. Any symptoms/issues with the bike?

                  If that came through the oil drain, then I'd drop the pan just to see what else is rolling around in there.

                    It's a piece of a bearing spacer cage. The holes are where the two halfs of the cage are riveted together.

                        Well I've got this thing almost ready to pull out, I just need to disconnect the shaft.

                        I went through the oil (I didn't drop the pan yet) and I didn't see anything gritty or shiny, and the oil filter looked okay too so I think and I hope that I caught this before anything got really ruined. As long as my spare engine works for now I'll rebuild this one over the winter.

                          Lets say this is from a bearing cage. If that is the case there is likely some major damage somewhere.

                          Can you hear any rumblings? How long have you had this engine? How many miles have you put on it?

                          When was the last time you took the sump off and looked in the sump strainer?

                          I ask these questions as it's possible a PO had a problem, fixed the problem and inadvertently left some shrapnel in the motor. It happened to me. One of my motors whilst it was in the POs hands, had a clutch explosion. Whole engine was rebuilt but he missed the stuff in the sump.

                          You might have a good motor with one bit of metal floating about. You just might.

                            Which bearing do you think it is? Looked through all the fiches and can't find one that would have those two rivet openings and can't remember ever seeing one. Just curious for future reference.
