Yep, I'd verify cam timing. Hopefully it's not too far off or you will be doing another top end removal and valve replacement. Check compression. If compression is good then it probably not valve timing.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

If you get odd barks out the pipes, I would also check to ensure the leads from the igniter are on the correct coils or conversely, check the plug wires are on the right plugs.

I seem to always get the wrong TDC mark on the crank and set the cams 180° out.Dogma

All the above.
Plus, no, it won't run and probably won't start with no airbox. Take the two minutes to install the airbox.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I will partly agree on the airbox.
It should start and idle, but won't do much more.
Yeah, take the two minutes to install it or take one minute to hold a folded rag over the intakes. You will still have to take the two minutes to install the airbox later, though.

I've managed to do the cams 180* out before. If fuel in the hole won't give you any fire that's what I would suspect.Ed

Thanks for all the help guys I have tried it with the airbox on but no joy
Ive stripped it all down again to check the valve timing all looks pretty good
But I'm just going to go through the whole procedure again so i know it'd defiantly right
I marked up the plug leads before i took it apart the 1st time so they should all be ok
I agree with you guys its got to be a timing issue
all help is greatly appreciated and welcome
How could it be 180* out ?? what would cause that ??

I want someone to tell me how to install a factory airbox in two minutes hehe... this is usually a matter for an afternoon spent using colorful language and grunting. I may eventually try some brand new rubber airbox connectors but I struggle with this every time. Seems the rubber connectors have a mind of their own and I do know they are marked for position (L & R).

The old ones shrink and harden to a degree it's hard to fathom without getting the new parts in your hand.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
