how to install chain if chain off bike - 81 and 83 750

I'm considering taking the chains off to clean them in the ultrasound. The chains have maser links.

If I pull them out, can I insert them around the front spocket w/o taking the case off and if I do need to take the case off, how hard is it?

    Working on 1983 GS 750E/ES and 1981 GS 750L
1981 GS750L - Owned since 1990 when graduated high school and since have been discovering all the things not disclosed by seller.
1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

If the same size chain you can avoid taking the case off at least one bike.

Got an old worn out chain?? If so, wire the end to the chain you want to clean and pull it around the front sprocket as you pull the chain you want to clean off the bike. Leave it dangle there and once you have clean the chain and ready to reinstall it just wire it to the crap chain and drag it thru again and put back on the rear sprocket with the master link.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

turns out taking the side cover off is no big deal even on the 83s where the clutch cable goes in.

Took the master links off and chains are in ultrasound cleaner

        thanks for the replies

I would be careful trying to clean an o ring chain in an ultrasonic cleaner - depending on what solution you are using and the time in the cleaner you might be in danger of removing the lubricant from underneath the o rings. In which case you most likely won't be able to get any lube back in there = accelerated chain wear.

Far safer just wet a rag with solvent and wipe the chain clean.
          Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

          Past:
          VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Using simple green but the purple one fairly diluted - same as for the carbs

I see your point, may reconsider on the O ring one.
