    GS650 cam chain tensioner

    Hi guys,
I'm obviously doing something wrong, but can't work out what...
Rebuilt the top end on my 85 GS650Gt and am at the stage of putting the cam chain tensioner back in. Following the manual, it works perfectly outside of the bike. However, when I mount it to the engine, and release the tension screw back, nothing at all happens. I can screw the screw way back and nothing changes.

    Am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks in advance,
    Pete

Just by casual observation, you will not see anything happening. You might FEEL it happen is you touch the large knurled knob on the right side of the tensioner.

    Proper installation procedure is:
    1. retract plunger while turning knurled knob to allow retraction
    2. install tensioner in cylinder block
    3. loosen setscrew to allow plunger to move
    4. turn setscrew IN until it touches plunger
    5. turn setscrew OUT 1/4 to 1/2 turn, use locknut to lock it in that position

    A prudent addition would be:
    6. turn crank forward by hand at least two full turns, verifying proper timing marks and that nothing binds

Many thanks Steve, I took it back out and double checked each instruction and followed your steps. I felt it on the third go.
So third time lucky and it has worked. Hand cranked it too and all is good.
      Thanks again, Pete
