    GS850GZ hard to turn over after crankcase works

    Hello,
    You may have seen my recent posts regarding the replacement of the oil seals between the engine oil and the gear oil compartments.

    Basically the engine was removed from the bike, split in two and the seals replaced. I replaced 4 seals in total, 2 in the gear box, 1 internally in the dog cam, and an oil seal in the oil tube from the oil pump.

    Also took the opportunity to replace the clutch plates whilst everything was dismantled.

    Used Three Bond 1104 gasket sealer on the two sections of crankcase when reinstalling.

    Before dismantling I checked that the transmission was in neutral and was very careful not to disturb the position of the 2 gear selection arms so that when reinstalled they went back into their correct position.

    After replacing the seals, the crankcase sections went beautifully back together, everything just slipped back into place. Turned secondary drive gear to make sure gears were back in neutral, all good.

    Installed engine back in the bike, connected up exhaust, carbies, wiring etc, waited a few days before I put oil back in the crankcase and gear box. (wanted to make sure Three Bond was set)

    Thought I'd turn the bike over without any fuel in carbies to circulate some oil around the system, when I hit the starter button, the starter relay clicked a number of times but the engine didn't turn over.

    Checked battery, the voltage was low, hence put on charger over night.

    Re attempted to turn the bike over next day, again starter relay clicked but engine didn't turn over, removed starter motor from engine, connected directly to battery, spun over as you would expect.

    Remove cover from stator / starter gearing housing, re-positioned starter motor, hit the go button, relay clicked, starter motor tried to turn over but to no avail.

    Removed spark pugs from head, put a 17mm socket on the nut end of crank and turned the motor over by ratchet and socket.

    Engine turned over, but was tight, as I spun the shaft in the rotation there also is a sticking point where I need to use a bit more force.

    Tried turning the motor over by hand without the use of the socket, held rotor with two hands and rotated crank shaft, engine turn over but again tight, and again could feel sticking point.

    Any ideas on what the issue could be? any advice is much appreciated.

    Seems someone here more knowledgable than me would have a suggestion to this problem.

    Kink in cam chain under crankshaft? Cam chain tensioner plunger not released?
    Cam timing off? Clutch hub missing thrust washer or shim?
    Alt/rotor taper worn out, pushing starter clutch into crankshaft bearing?
    Washers on idler gear when none are needed?

      Any progress? I'd pull clutch basket and make sure that it's not causing binding somehow.

        Thanks Tom & Carter for your responses.

        I have began stripping the engine down again,basically as I remove a part I try and turn the engine over to see if the tightness removes.
        I am at the stage where I am down to splitting the crank case.
        Removed clutch basket as suggested, crank still tight.
        i am planning on lifting the stripped down engine out of the frame tonight, will begin separating the cases and see what I find........................hopefully I find something!
        I will post my findings.
