Puff of air sideways from engine during start? Hitting my pantleg...wierd

So, I have this strange occurrence when starting my GS750T when its cold out. The engine will jam, or stop abruptly not initially turning over. Then sometimes I will feel a puff of air hit my pantleg on the shifter side of the engine during this abrupt stop. . within a few tries the engine turns over , and starts, but its been somewhat disconcerning. Where is this puff of air coming from? Could it be a head gasket ( gulp)

The kicker is, once started, its fine, and once warm, its a completely normal running engine.

Any Ideas what this puff of air could be? Exhaust leak from the exhaust pipe connection maybe?

I'm concerned, but the bike always starts, then runs fine.

    Hit me back.. and thanks

Pete, sorry I don't have the answer but I'll be curious to see what kind of feedback you get here. I've felt that puff of air a before with my 850.

Before next cold start, remove starter motor cover and see if starter is submerged.

Right!...does it happen accompanied by a "misfire" type sound? Like it's as if the battery is weak, and the engine is having trouble turning, and a compression builds and like POPS, and you get that puff of air?

Stock airbox....sealed with duct tape other than main inlet at bottom. ( Last owner made a hole in it by removing it without first removing the seat mount front bracket) New stock OEM Filter. All air pathways on the inlet side are tight and sealed.

Not exactly. No trouble turning over but kind of a backfire sound more like, but much quieter.

When I was synching the carbs, I used the extended brass tubes (proper name?) rather than the Carbtune barbed plastic ones. The hoses kept popping off one by one and made it a maddening task. I figured this same sort of "back pressure" was causing that mysterious puff.

BTW, mine has the stock airbox.

                  Left had side?

I know this may sound weird, but, when I was experiencing starter kick back, it seemed like a puff of air!?

I would rather trust my bike to a technician that reads the service manual than some backyardigan that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix things.
