Shifting issue
I'm new to the motorcycle world so maybe this is some dumb safety thing I don't know about, but I don't think so. I just finished my rebuild and I can't shift out of first gear unless I'm moving. Is this supposed to be this way/ what is my probable cause?Tags: None

I am going to have to assume that you are talking about a GS here, because this is a GS forum.
Yes, it makes a difference, because Kawasaki had a feature that prevented engagement of second gear unless the bike was moving.
Suzuki never had that feature, so it's possible that it might just be a matter of cold oil or clutch adjustment.

Yeah I bought and rebuilt a 83 GS 450. It is my first motorcycle so I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some weird safety feature.
