    GS650g

I own a 1981 GS850g. I have heard that they eat crank shaft bearings, my bike is a perfect running 1 owner before me of course, bike with 60000 miles, I'm at a point where I'm gonna My to be spending some money on the bike, I quess my question is am I spending my hard earned money on a ticking clock. I know no one can say when these things happen but is it pretty Likley on the GS650's
It’s my bike I’ll run it in the ground if I want to

No need to worry about the engine. No idea why someone thinks they eat bearings.

It's the electronics you need to keep an eye on. Second gear might be a little problem too if you get too hard on it. The bearing on the 81 650g i had was way worn out and would false neutral in the fun rpm range

There is some level of history of crank problems on the 650. It's not super common though so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

          yes, charging....

ALSO Check rear wheel spline these can wear out quickly depending on year (82 I think) so keep it lubricated if ok now.
AND keep an ear open for "whining" which indicates "Zooks Syndrome" (see Bass Cliffs site for a pdf titled "Bevel Gear Shaft Repair" by MrZooks..) it so happens there's a recent example on an 850 here

Gorminrider, it was the 82 bevels that were known to go shredded cheddar. The 81 and 83 gears are the recommended units to use

I remembered seeing a few threads about final drives and what years to get, an 82s were the ones to avoid. I think there was also a color coding to id the manufacture year
