valve adjustment and compression test
Had the valves adjusted on my 1980 gs850 they were way off now all within spec. it's only been driven about 30 miles since adj. the valves. I did a compression test on a cold engine with throttle wide open got 80 psi on all cyl. good or bad ?Tags: None

Please find basscliff's website and get yourself a manual. Things like the compression specs are within. I can tell you without looking though that 80 psi is critically low. As long as it runs and idles okay then just ride it...hard. Most likely the valves all tightened up and now are carboned up. An Italian tune up will help. Hopefully the metal on the seats and valves are not damaged and some good miles will cause the compression to come up.Ed

+1 on what Ed said. Very critical to do this right.

After the valves were done it ran good with( what seemed to me) lots of power . I was going to replace coils, shocks and front springs but didn't want to spend the money if the engine needs work.

Test it after about 500 miles, THEN make sure it's hot when you test it.
This is all assuming that the bike has not been run much (if any) for quite a while. It's possible that the rings are stuck, so some good running, including many blasts up to redline will help free them up.
