82 gs 750t hard time cold starting
I've been chasing this issue for a while to no avail. Just adjusted valves which were all very tight, and noticed significant change in warm starting and how it ran. But it still doesn't want to reliably start in the morning without pop starting it. What should I look at, carbs have been recently torn apart and cleaned.Tags: None

I am no expert but having just gotten my own 82 750E ( just got home from a 55 mile ride through the mountains with the wife) reliably running I will venture a couple of ideas. You didnt say what happened when you tried to start it. Does it crank over.
First I would look at electrical. At one point I had discovered my charging system was not working so my battery, though it read having a charge, was too low of a charge to reliably turn the bike over. Once I put a new charging system and battery it literally explodes to life.
I assume you are using the enricher. Since its probably way cold where you are make sure it is fully open and hold it with your thumb. It can and will creep closed.
You said you tore the carbs apart. Did you confirm float heights? When I pulled mine apart I found that one was very much out of spec. Could mean you are just not having enough fuel in the bowls to get a good pop.
I might try starting the bike on prime if you are using a vacuum petcock. Put it on prime .. wait a couple of minutes and give it a go. You wont hurt the bike starting it or running it on prime and at least you can eliminate to some degree the petcock or spot it as the culprit.
Still trying to nail my idle but the bike starts and runs like a champ. As strong, fast and smooth as I remember.Last edited by Guest; 10-22-2017, 03:37 PM.

Three things are necessary for easy starting:
1. Properly-adjusted valves. Tight valves make it very difficult to start when cold.
You say you have adjusted the valves.
2. Clean, properly-adjusted carbs.
You say they were "recently torn apart and cleaned". HOW were they "cleaned"? You can't just spritz some spray around in the bowls to make them look good. You need to soak them overnight, then rinse, spray some carb cleaner throu all the passages, then blow them out with compressed air. Then you need to re-assemble them with new o-rings from cycleorings.com. Adjustments will follow, but you need CLEAN carbs.
3. A strong battery.
By "pop start", do you mean a jump start from another vehicle or a push start in gear, then release the clutch? Each has its own hazards, but a good battery will eliminate the need for either one.
Tom hints at using full "choke". Note that some bikes need it, others get by with less. Some don't need any at all. Once you get the bike to start, move the lev a bit to see where it idles the highest. Use that point, or just to the right of that, to start the bike. Anything more than that might be too much.

My morning temps though are around 60-65 degrees and if I couldn't start I would start with full open and then adjust from there.

As I said, each bike is going to have its own personality. My wife's '82 850L uses about half "choke", we have just learned how far to move the lever under the left handgrip. My '80 850G(K) has been converted to an '82-style "choke" activation system, and it needs full "choke".
