I thought it may be your first GS based on the stress level comming through your posts. Trust me that engine is as solid as the day it came out of the factory down below. The oil pump is a higher volume than other GSs and they dont ever fail...least ive never heard of one failing. Yes, the wear parts such as the stem seals go bad eventually but thats mostly due to inactivity from setting around. If you do the full top end youre good for the next 20 years.

And you can beat the living hellllls out of it and its just gonna smile and ask for more.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Yup! GS engines are good for 100,000+ miles with proper maintenance. We trust you are doing your valve adjustments right? There is pretty much zero reason to crack the cases unless the odometer has rolled and the bike has 130k!

Meh, throw a nice tight GS1000 engine in it and ride with a smile on your face for the next twenty years or so.

          Thanks, Chuck.

I was debating whether to do new rings on my bike over the winter, in preparation for our trip next year.
They have rings for the 850, too, so I guess I will soon be looking for a gasket set, too.

            Ed,

            (Sorry about zombie thread...)

Do recommend a specific viton valve stem seal?

            Thanks, Alan
