    GS550 head gasket question

The '77-79 GS550 used a head gasket and four separate sealing rings; two separate parts/numbers.
The '80 has a different head gasket part number and the diagram appears to show that the four sealing rings are now part of the head gasket.

Will the '77-79 parts fit and seal on a 1980? Is the only difference the fact that they included the sealing rings on the head gasket and not separate?

There was one extra bolt added in the middle front of the engine so the gasket changed to accommodate. I'm not sure when the change occured but it might have been a running change, not a model year change. The later gasket will work with the early engine, but not the other way around.

Hmmm...well, dang. I found an open but complete, genuine Suzuki gasket set for the early model. If I look at my engine, will the extra bolt be obvious?

Yes, it will be obvious. I think it is front and center, by the cam chain tunnel.

Are you aware that when you change the head gasket it is also prudent to change the BASE gasket?
In the process of removing the head, you undoubtedly jiggled the cylinders a bit, which destroys the base gasket, requiring replacement.
Also note that use of OEM gaskets for the head and base is highly recommended.

Yes, I am aware of disturbing the base gasket when doing the head gasket.

Just checked the photos you posted previously and your engine has the extra bolt.

Yep, quick look in the garage and it was obvious.

Check that parts diagram. I think the rings come with the gasket. The rings are also available separately.
