    A couple of questions on

cam chain wear limits and also the cam chain guides.

#1, how does one check for wear of the cam chain?

#2, according to the parts fiche, it appears that the front guide sits inside a holder at the bottom of the chain where it is going over the sprocket down below. Is this right?

    TIA

p.s. I did try to search for the chain wear limits but it was tiring. Too many posts about drive chains. (sorry)

Pretty certain that cam chain wear is determined by measuing the distance between a specific number of chain pins. Not sure of the details though.

If you've got the downloaded manual for the GS1000 it's on page 2-3. Anyway wear limit is 157.80mm over a 20 link length (21 pins). The pitch spec is 7.774mm so new length would be 155.48 allowing for only 2.32mm wear for that length.

FYI. I just measured mine at 156.36mm giving a wear of .88mm which is about 1/3 of the max wear spec. Pretty good considering it's got about 80,000kms (50,000 miles) on it. I guess they really should last the life of the bike if maintained properly like frequent oil changes and making sure the adjuster is functioning. Not much else to do. Or just change it when you reach 150,000 miles. LOL.
