I seem to remember, a few years ago on here, a member posted the modifications he had done to his motor (a GS750 iirc), to positively locate the cams, and eliminate most end float. The tap tapping was annoying him! I've tried to find his thread, but failed. Anyone remember it, or know how to find it???

Morning Guys!

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

My GS850G (truth be told, most of the engine is actually from a 1981 GS850GL) makes gawdawful cam walk noises when it's in between cold and fully warmed up, and has for many thousands of miles.
I've invested in quality ear plugs.Last edited by bwringer; 04-17-2018, 05:38 PM.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I just made the cam cap end square to the head surface, the more material removed from cap the thicker the brass shim. Of course you need the valves out and the other caps nipped down. I used a dial gauge to check end float, about 2 thousands of an inch.My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125.
