    Cam/Timing Chain Parts Questions

Can anyone recommend a cam/timing chain replacement for a 79 GS1000S, looking for something with a master link so I don't have to split the cases.

Source and part numbers would be great too.

Failing that, how difficult to split them if head and cylinder are off, and how difficult to put back together again?

    Thanks

Splitting the cases is no fun, but I wouldn't use a master link type camshaft chain. Why do you think that you need a new one?
    high mileage ?

Look up d.i.d. 219 Gold on gold kart chain. It comes in fixed lengths, so you’ll have to buy long and spend $20 on a chain breaking tool (or make your own like I had to do to work on a cl175) to adjust to length. It’s the hot set up for gp200 race bikes, and has worked well on my gs1100 for the past 10,000 miles or so.

Don't know the part numbers, but Z1 enterprises sells what you are looking for. I just replaced one on my 850 without splitting the cases. I've put about 2500 miles on so far without issues.

I would measure the existing chain to see if it's still in-spec before going to the trouble of replacing it.

Whether you split the cases or split the chain, it's not going to be fun.
