Who makes a GOOD top end gasket kit, and piston rings for a 79 GS1000S ?

    Thanks

    The obvious answer is "Suzuki".

Some of us have used rings from eBay seller cruzinimage_co with good success. I bought two sets based on a recommendation from Chuck Hahn, who has used them on several bikes. About $40-$45 for a set of four.

Suzuki may or may not have a full kit for your bike, but it's not hard to put together the pieces. I have found that even "full" kits don't have all the gaskets you need, so you will need to get a few extras anyway. I have found that the cam tensioner gasket has not been included in any kit, let alone the o-rings to rebuild the tensioner. It's also good to replace the o-rings in the tach drive while you are at it.

So far, I'm happy with them. My son has put a few more miles on his 1000 than I have on my 850 since re-ringing them both. He put on about 1500-2000 miles before oil consumption settled down to a negligible amount. He has about 5500 miles on it now, it takes over 1000 miles to get the oil level from the top of the window to the bottom.

I had only put about 1000 on my bike, then found it was hard to judge oil consumption via the rings when I had a leak like this:

However, after damming the leak with a generous slathering of JB Weld, I did another 1000 miles to get it home. That last 1000 miles only used about a quart, and considering the "leak", I think the rings are doing their job quite well.

Ive bought several different things from Cruzinimages..rings, gasket sets for different UJM brands, carb kits and bowl gaskets just to name a few. Seems to be good stuff so far from my perspective. I think they are a Japanese company too. Veshra and OEM wont do you wrong either.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

I'm not going to say that Vesrah is no good, but that's a Vesrah base gasket in the video above.

I have used this firm for piston rings for my 850 have done around 5000 miles on them this year I have just notched up 2000 miles and have not used any oil at all.
the link is for a gs1000 they are more expensive than cruzinimage but about half the price of suzuki ones this is in the uk
parts are cheaper in the USA for oem than here in the uk.

The big guy up there rides a Suzuki (this I know)

Thanks everyone, looks like OEM is going to be the choice.
