    Change Chain and Sprockets on Gs1000s

    Thinking of changing Chain and sprockets on My Gs1000s from 630 to 530 for weight saving,any one done this mod or do I just stay to a 630 15/42 set up...

    I think off hand I use an 18 47 combo with my 530 chain, cant remember chain link count. From what I can remember I got a 120 link length of regina x ring and rivet link and cut it to size. That sprocket combo is a little taller ratio than standard but drops the revs on the motorway.
    My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Project bike 79 GS1000N

      it seems to me that going to a 530 would be a sensible thing to do, after making sure the tensile strength of a modern 530 matches/exceeds that of the OEM 630. you may need to pick a high strength 530. other than that i can't think of a downside.

      clearances on my gs750 are tight, don't think i could go +1 on the front sprocket let alone +2. something to check i guess. i went -1 on the front for better accel, not much highway riding for me. pic shows clearance to forward cover mounting boss, it's close. maybe on your bike it's better.

        I don't pricing in the UK but at least the shipping should be cheap.

          That is one of the most common mods around here, there are piles of threads on it. Search in this forum and the General Maintenance and Performance Mods forums on '530' and you will have lots of reading. It is very worthwhile to do if you need to replace a chain anyway. It saves weight, offers more clearance on wider tires (if you care) and gives a much larger selection of chains and sprockets to choose from as 630 is not a common size anymore while 530 is probably the most common size at the moment. If I ever manage to wear out the 630 chain on my 1100E I will change to a 530 chainset.

          You misunderstand how this works. The 530 chain pitch (the distance between rollers) is 5/8" while the 630 pitch is 3/4", so you need to go up teeth on the 530 to keep it the same diameter as the 630. The OEM 630 countershaft sprocket is 15 teeth, so the 530 sprocket needs to be 6/5 x 15 = 18 teeth for the same pitch diameter. If you don't step up in tooth count the sprocket is too small and the chain rubs on the swingarm. Same deal for the rear, 6/5 x 42 = 50.4 teeth. Because that is in between you end up with a slightly taller or shorter ratio than the original 15/42. It makes no noticeable difference on the road, though.

              Thank You for all Your replies My Gs1085s is used mostly ridden two up it doesn't have any performance cams fitted ,but is puts out 68lbs torque and about 90BHP but goes well I trying to find a few more Gee gees Lol..
