    Valve Cover Special Washer

About to do valve adjustment for the first time and have question about this washer. I know I should replace these when I reinstall the cover. They look like they had a rubber coating on them. $3.95/each seems a bit much, but if you all say I need 'em them I'll get the legit suzuki part. Or can I get something that will work the same at the hardware store. A quick gander at the good hardware store that actually sells a good variety of loose hardware didn't have anything like this.

Wherever you are getting them for $3.95 is ripping you off.

Brand-new OEM washers from Suzuki will cost you $1.36, but shipping will run it up there to about the same total cost.

You could also go to a REAL hardware store (NOT Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) and look for "Dowty washers". Stock ones are M6, but 1/4" ones will work just fine.

They are called DOWTY washers. get thm from about any mom and pops hrdware for 50 cents each. You can also buy sealing screws used for building pole barns and just remove the dowty washers off them. Some are a bit concave but a tap with the hmmwr flattens them. I use the screws when im replcing the washers on the petcock bolts. No need to be paying 3 bcks for a Suzuki "speciality" washer.

EDIT::: Didnt see Steves reply but we are on the same pge here.

Thanks guys. I'll look harder at the hardware store now that I know what I'm looking for.

I splurged a couple of weeks ago, I bought a pack of 50. Wasn't in a rush for them, so got them on eBay. Came from England, cost about $30, including shipping, which made them about 60 cents a piece.

Now, if I can remember where I stashed them, I should be set for quite a while.

Yep, these little 6mm sealing washers are actually used in several places on a GS.

Since I don't have a 16-valve engine, I use them on the petcock.

thanks for that. I was trying to think of where else I saw this type of washer on my bike. It's been a few (at least 10) since I had the petcock off to do body work and beadblast the tank.

Oops! I just did my first valve adjustment on my 16V engine. Didn’t replace these washers. Is that all that bad? Guess I better get down to the hardware store soon (chef1366 is rebuilding my carbs right now :-) )

Put a smear of Hylomar under the washer and you'll be fine.
Actually, the asking price of what should be cheap and cheerful rubbery washers just got my nose out of joint (even when the seller isn't asking too much, they lay on shipping that makes me wince) and I went looking on that large Chinese site, so I'll order some from there, for about 10c each, and free shipping.

went back to the harward store and dug a little deeper, found a bin of these. $.29 a piece.

it's not a dowty like the original, but after reading all above, I'm not worried.
