While in neutral, I can shift up all the way to 4 or 5 (I'm at work so I can't check the exact gears at the moment) without holding the clutch. However, while in neutral, I cannot shift down to first unless I hold in the clutch. I haven't checked this starting from 1st yet.

Clutch acting up?
So... bug or feature?

I assume you are doing this when the engine is stopped? However stopped or running it is good practice to pull in the clutch lever when changing gears. Not doing so will result in damage sooner or later. The big guy up there rides a Suzuki (this I know)

I will bet that if you roll the bike a few inches forward or back, you will be able to drop it into first.
I can usually move from one gear to another, but don't usually get more than two shifts without having to rock the bike.
If the engine is not running, you won't hurt anything, but best not to try it if the engine is running.

KZ bikes of the GS era had a feature where you couldn't select 2nd and higher unless the bike was moving. GS bikes have no such feature though.Ed
