    Clutch acting up?

    So... bug or feature?

While in neutral, I can shift up all the way to 4 or 5 (I'm at work so I can't check the exact gears at the moment) without holding the clutch. However, while in neutral, I cannot shift down to first unless I hold in the clutch. I haven't checked this starting from 1st yet.

I assume you are doing this when the engine is stopped? However stopped or running it is good practice to pull in the clutch lever when changing gears. Not doing so will result in damage sooner or later.

I will bet that if you roll the bike a few inches forward or back, you will be able to drop it into first.

I can usually move from one gear to another, but don't usually get more than two shifts without having to rock the bike.

If the engine is not running, you won't hurt anything, but best not to try it if the engine is running.

I'm doing it while the bike is stationary. The engine doesn't run yet. It just worries me that I can shift without using the clutch.

KZ bikes of the GS era had a feature where you couldn't select 2nd and higher unless the bike was moving. GS bikes have no such feature though.

The fact that you can shift without using the clutch and without the engine running is not a problem.

You need to take some advice from my hero. :-

Thanks. This is the first motorcycle I have ever owned, so my knowledge is rather limited.
