    valve cover bolts

id say about a week back i found out that out of the 17 bolts that go on my valve cover, 3 of the bolts are different from the rest just by length, where do these 3 bolts go?

Apparently you ignored all those who suggested (recommended) that you draw an outline of the valve cover on a piece of cardboard, then poke holes where the bolts go, then put the bolts in those holes as you remove them.

Since you did not do that, you will have to experiment a bit. Finding the location of two of them will be real easy. There are two locator barrels on opposite corners of the cover. One longer bolt goes in each of them. To find the third location, take your longer bolt, slip it into a hole next to one of the other long bolts. Notice how far it sticks up from the cover. Move it to every other hole until you find the one where you have about half as much sticking out. Now put all the other bolts in and torque them.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

I suppose will have to figure out where a short one will be too short and put a long one there, ..... and/or check to see if can figure out if a long one will be too long and put a short one there.

You only have three long ones. Two of them go in opposite corners where the locator dowels are, shouldn't be too hard to find where the remaining one goes.
