1150 transmission question...

    1150 transmission question...

    We're working on a GS1150 and while its apart we wanted to be sure everything was ok before putting it back together. We noticed this "dog" looked worn... or maybe its supposted to look like this... maybe someone can look at these pics and let me know if they look ok. Also, is there anything else that I should check while Im in there?

    Instead of reading through the pages of responses to this (lol), we decided to replace the gear to be on the safe side. We didn't want to have to pull it all apart again.

      I guess no one knows the answer
      eh? To me the little cut outs look machined, but as you pointed out...it is also where the cogs would meet.

        The new gears came in Wed and they have flat 90 degree shoulders. I'll bring them by and we can figure out how to press the old ones off and get the new ones on.

          Youre a smart man TxGSrider. Sounds like a plan. Thats going to be like a new engine when you get it put back together.

            Yes, that dog is badly damaged. It can be built up and recut but if you've got new...
            I'd also note that the shaft splines don't look particularly good in the pic. If you can feel indentations with a fingernail I'd replace that too.
            You also need to work out what is worn to let that happen. Shift forks ? Fork rails bent ? Shift drum side clearance excessive ?

            Before you press the end bearing off, measure how far on the shaft it sits. If you can, make up a spacer exactly this length to fit closely over the shaft.
            When the bearing is pressed back on, use this spacer to press it to the correct position. Much easier than "press and measure"

            Also, I seriously hope the dogs on the new gear are not cut at 90 degrees. They should be undercut about 5 degrees....
