Im bored and dreaming of a belt drive conversion

I have been so bored I am actually looking up interchange fitment of ls650 savages to gs 550s

The countershaft of each has 13 splines and eyballing ot looks like the circumference of the small end is the same.

Witch of course is another issue.

It seems that a lot of down on their luck 650 owners do a chain conversion to avoid buying the OEM belt at about 300 USD

650 is s posed to top out at 30 HP vs 64 for my 550 so its perverse but hell still a fun thing to try.

The rear spindle mount for the pulley looks identical to the backside of my chain drive. The paddles that insert into the cush drive look identical.

Suzuki certainly should be lauded for their parts bin approach to engineering.

Since I got the k bike I have started hating chains. Dirty miserable high maintenance works of the devil. When the K bike finallyy kills its final drive at 2000 USD for parts I may recant my current religious zeal.

Time waster thread since you will never actually do the swap. All fun and games I suppose but just saying based on past experience with other nonsense you have posted before.

Looking further the ls650 does not use a push rod clutch. I suppose the reason could be a lack of space on the output side of the tranny but then other chain drive bikes GS bikes use a lever atop the cases too.

Cross listed the lock washer for the pulley vs the 550s and the numbers are close. I assume that the second listing which is for the 550 has no size specific information encoded in the second part of the part number. Might be thicker or thinner I suppose. It seems then counter-shaft splines may be identical especially since LS650 specific sites indicate that folks are swapping 550 counter-shaft sprockets.

      Part# 09167-25027 Desc WASHER -SU USD Price 2.52 LS650 2016
      Part# 09167-25019 Desc WASHER,LOCK -SU USD Price 2.52 GS 550 1983

You can get kitted out for 50 dollars or so on ebay so what the hell I may try this.
Room around the output shaft and a clear path for the belt are an unknown.

I wouldn't put it so cruelly, but if it ain't broke, don't break it.

Isn't there a belt in the Gates catalogue, that would be a tenth of the price?

A lot of the forum information on this bike is old and has an apocryphal bent that would shame the worst oil thread.

Some guy quoted a super strong?? (Not sure if its metric or imperial super strong) for 480 bucks USD Ill need to look up the charts. The OEm uses polyurethane that is ribbed across ot width on the outside to reduce cracking. Its unlike a rubber harley buell type belt.

One thing Id need to take off the swingarm as the 650 design has the swing arm pivot end inside the belt where my bike has em on the outside. Not a big deal I have had it apart a few dozen times mostly due to dirt impacted link bushins howling like a banshee.

ls650 is 45 ish nm torque mine is 49 ish obviously at different rpms. They are a similar weight as well.

I have been poring over parts interchange and found the following:

The rear sprocket\pulley carrier is the same part on both bikes.
64611-31003 the bearing in the carrier is also identical and has a 17mm id so the axle will also fit.
The spacers differ in length but have the same ID and OD.

Wondering about whether there is sufficient clearance in the swing-arm to accommodate the larger diameter of the driven pulley. Belt width is 40 mm but there is a thin rim on the pulley so its a tad wider over all. The 550's 530 chain is 21.9 mm wide at the pin tips. Which will only take up c 10mm of space where the driven pulley needs to fit.

The front pulley splines match on both bikes but again a combo of spacers will likely need to be used. same parts numbers for the nut but washer is either thinner or thicker.

Clearance is especially tight on the 550 in space between the chain and the clutch push rod. A worn chain rides a little loose and it gets almost to the point of touching the rod. A belt of course will ride beneath the outer diameter of the pulley so I need to check the diameters of both. For some reason the pulley diameter is not posted anywhere I have found.

14 t front sprocket is c. 80 mm so its a bit bigger with the chain installed.

              Final drive ratio changes
              550 stock is 47\14 3.357
              ls650 68/23 2.956

I know Id be revving lower but how much lower?

                3.357/2.956 = 1.136

Divide whatever rpm you are running now at whatever speed by 1.136 and you will have your answer.
