    '83 550es vibration/noise, all rpms

I am selling the 550es and both prospective buyer and I noticed a new noise and vibration.

Backstory. I bought this bike number of years ago as a loaner for my brother. We took it for a small tour and have put less than 1000 miles on it since purchased. It has been sitting for a long time, but when last run there were no signs of this noise and vibration.

Recent work includes new Cam chain tensioner gasket, oil change, and carb cleaning/synch. All presumably ok.

The vibration doesnt go away at any particular rpm, and is noticeable through the handlebars. The sound is more obvious down low and forward, near the stator, but could be transferring.

I know that some of the larger bikes had issues with a clutch basket/hub rattle, but I haven't heard about this with the 550es. It

It does sound similar, based on videos I have watched.

What other things should I be thinking about as I delve into this?

Starter clutch could be an issue
Pull the stator cover and see if it's loose

That's the way I was leaning. Thanks for the suggestion, T.

Prospective buyer was thinking potentially rod knock, but it just doesn't seem like it to me

Also check that the clutch hub nut is not loose. That allows the whole basket to rattle, it won't come off totally due to the bent washer but will allow it to loosen off slightly or through thread stretch. It's pretty common. The Ape Nut or an 1150 Nut is harder material & some loctite wouldn't hurt either.

I would also have a look at the speedo drive & front wheel bearing if it's been sitting a while and only does it when moving.....

The vibration and noise is there on the centre stand, moreso after it has been ridden for awhile, but still a good suggestion to check as they could be contributing to the felt vibration at speed.
