My gas tank appears to be leaking engine oil

There is oil on the underside of it, on the wires, running down the front and sides of the bike. Its enough oil its smoky when I stop.

At first I thought the tach wire, but I tighened it and I dont see how that would fling oil up to the gas tank and top of engine. The breather cover is soaked.

Anything I should try before buying new gaskets?

Clean and dry everything. Spray the whole top of engine and all gasket cracks with powdered foot spray. Start bike. Easy to see where the leaks are.

valve cover gasket leaks are common, oil can end up all over while riding. Rich has the right idea....clean and investigate

Can't oil come out the breather under certain circumstances?

          Is the oem gasket yellow?

Ill try to clean it up when the engine gets cold.

Right next to the tach cable the gasket stops being as visible I suspect that might be the place.

Wonder if the bike shop can quickly get me parts.

Do you have a hose attached to the breather cover nipple?

That'll definitely smoke if it comes loose. It gives your clothes that nice-just rode a motorcycle- fragrance too.

Oil VAPOR, yes, but only if there is not a hose connecting the breather cover to the airbox.

You have pods on your bike, so you are not accustomed to that concept.

Smoke is coming from the exhaust parts that the oil hits, then it evaporates or burns and makes smoke.

I guess I need to clean it, figure out where the leak is from, and then ride it for a long trip to measure how much oil I lose per kilometer.

A bit worried about my Oslo trip now.

Could I just use liquid gasket?

But what I wouldn't give for that just-rode-a-motorcycle fragrance. (I think I'll go rub some wrenches on my ribs.)

50 mph wind, from riding a bike, will blow oil where you wouldn't think, from where you wouldn't think. Tightening the tach cable?? there are 2 or 3 seals & "O" rings in that little rascal. It takes a whale of a (very baaad) oil leak to make the eng. show low of oil within a few hundred miles.

You obviously don't know the oil consumption habits of my 1000E. To make matters worse, then are no areas that show leakage.
