    engine / secondery leak perhaps?

nice new build startup, looks like the engine oil has run into the secondary drive box and pushing out thro the vent under starter

We can guess which model you ride, but it's still a good idea to create a signature with your year/model. Good luck and welcome.

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

Mine does that but never gets too full.
I change the oil out every few thousand miles.
There is a thread here somewhere about splitting the case and replacing the seal.

Mine does the same. Case has to be split to replace the seal so for now I do frequent oil and gear oil changes. As for mine it seemed like around every 2k miles or so it would start to come out the breather hose.

Could someone if have time explain where
this secondary engine box is, that oil
          leaks out from ?

I have stripped my engine and have never
seen anything like what is almost portrayed
          here ?
My bike follows the normal 4st design with a
          sump.......

(I'm gonna go back to the tarpaulin thread I think )

It's not really a box. It's a separate compartment in some shaft drive machines where the drive makes a right angle to face the shaft.
iirc 650 shaft do not have it.
It lives just inside the place where the drive sprocket is on a chain drive machine.

A common cause for this is the carbs have leaked gas in the crankcase causing it to be way over full....
