Popping sound coming from engine as I turn it

There's plastic-sounding popping sound coming from the engine when I turn it manually. I think it's the timing chain on the intake side, popping. Problem is, as far as I saw, it was fine. Wasn't misaligned.

How can I make sure it behaves?

You’ve had the head off. Did you remove, reset, and reinstall the cam chain tensioner after resetting you cam timing?

I removed it, but am unable to reset it. The locking screw is frozen. Any attempt to turn it seems to split the head.

I’m honestly not sure if it’s OK to reinsert the tensioner without first locking it back with the set screw turned all the way in, then once it’s bolted on, loosening the set screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn, then setting the lock nut. I do know there’s a good tensioner rebuild tutorial on BikeCliffs Website. Steve knows a lot about these too IIRC, as does Bwringer, who wrote the tutorial linked below.

Take the jam nut off the set screw and put a piece of an old leather belt in the jaws of vice grips to protect the thread. Unseize the set screw. Also are you rolling the engine over clockwise with the 19MM nut under the ignition cover. The engine doesnt like being turned the wrong way

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
