hi People is it possible to fit a new crank seal on the rotor side without removing and splitting the engine ? I found the tail end of a thread on here, but cant seem to locate it again, could somebody point me in the right direction please, many thanks.Tags: None

Yes, it's pretty straightforward.
Make sure you put the seal in the correct way around; it will need to be installed "backwards" in order to seal properly. Somewhere on the seal will be a teensy weensy arrow indicating the direction the shaft should turn.
Push the seal into place with an 8mm bolt in the crankshaft and a suitable arrangement of washers, spacers, etc. Don't pound it in with a hammer, and don't push it in too far.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I had an GS850 that had an oil leak (small drip) from what I thought was the stator cover. After replacing the gasket didn't fix the problem the leak was traced to oil dropping off the head of one of the large 8mm case screws. Apparently a case sealer skip was allowing oil to get between the case halves where it found an exit path down the passage for that one case screw. I wound up removing that screw and using a copper washer on the head in order to stop the leak.Ed
