    C is for Custom

    Well if you haven't seen it already here is a picture of my 78 GS1000C in Blue that I picked up Thursday evening the 14th. I bought it as is and ready to ride. However, having already owned a GS1000C I have quite a collection of parts and accesories to put on it. Some of them pretty sweet. I thought I would share.

    Here it is as it was when I bought it. Photo taken today at work:

    I looked at it and figured that the S model faring I have would be a sure fit. It is black with gold and blue pin strips. Well as you can see my bike is blue with black side covers and pipes. So I though it would match nicely. It does. The gold trim is the same as the gold trim on the bike and the blue trim is the same color and the blue stripe that goes down the center of the tank and tail piece.

    So I put it on and took off the stock mirrors and put on the new set of S model mirrors I have. I'll have to get another set for my other 78 now but oh well. I also took off those tacky and useless ugly highway pegs.

    Lookin agressive now huh?

    The fairing was a challange to put on. It took me all evening because the upper brackets I have are used and were very bent up. Most likely off of a wreck. But worse than that was that the headlight mounts were bent. The headlight sat off to the right and all four turn signals were bent. Some worse than others but they all went their own ways. I got all four straigtened and the fairing on.

    It looks a lot better. Here is a front shot:

    Now I need to work on the rear. The seat fitting is messed up? Not sure what happened there but it does not line up and the tail piece is crocked too:

    I'll get those squared away next.

    I am also putting a set of new Daytona black bars on it that I just bought off eBay. They are very similar to superbike bars but have a slightly deeper pull back. I want that because of the fairing:

    I really like this bike. I needed it worse than it needed me that's for sure

    Mark - lookin good!!

    A few words of advice from one who suffers - don't take this one apart until the other one's running!! You don't want to be without wheels this spring!! 8) or, really, anytime ...

      Yea Hoomie! Keep yer schitt hooks offin that bike till ya gets the udder one runnin!

      I'm glad you have a bike again. A Hoomie without a motorcycle is like a dairy farm without teets! 8O (that's mine - I just patented it. Wrench - keep yer stealin fingers offin it.)

        Have fun on it Mark! With all that extra time you always have, I'm sure you'll have it lookin' spit shiny new in a jiffy!
        And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
        Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

          Yeah I don't plan on tearing it down. That's the whole reason I bought this bike. Because of the delay with the other one. I did 100 miles today to test her out. Did some shock preload and dampening adjustments and took about 1/3 of the route for the upcoming PA run.

          Over all it is pretty comfortable. The things I found out today that I didn't like are these:

          1. The new S model mirrors are useless with those bars so until I get the other ones I had to put the stock ones back on as well. So it has 4 mirrors right now

          2. It weeps a little bit and there is an oil leak down under somewhere
          Neither of which require any major wrenching as they are minor and can wait to be repaired.

          Other things I learned about it today that are neutral, not good or bad:

          1. The S fairing mounts need a bit of tweaking yet. It isn't exactly right on yet and if you look at it long and hard you can see that. I think that may be contributing to a little front end wobble at speeds over a ton. But I don't plan on spending a lot of time up there with this bike so it isn't really an issue. But it does get there so quick and easy you have to keep checking the speedo. I am also still thinking the speedo is off.

          2. It is getting about 24-25 miles to the gallon. I was hoping for more but I think it is jetted aggressively for the K&N pods and the header. My other GS1000 was getting 20-22 miles to the gallon when I tore it down so I am used to stopping every hundred miles for fuel

          Things I reaffirmed today that I already knew but were good good good just the same are:

          1. This thing is bad to the bone! It will getty up baby! 8O 8)

          2. The pipe on it is VERY LOUD and tough to all because I love it It is a cool bracking sound and really cracks!

          3. It loves to ride through the countryside and along creeks as well as hit the open roads. It's me new buddy

          4. It's a head turner (most likely the loud pipe) as almost everyone even pedestrians were waving to me and I got at least 3 thumbs up today. One was from a guy mowing his lawn

          5. The Cheng Shin tires seem to be really good? They stick nice and I even did a peg dragger today so it is leaning as far as you can take it with them on. No slippage at all.

          6. The front end comes up when you were not planing it to! 8O 8O 8O I am not used to these bars. They sit you up in more of an upright position and put your upper body weight too far back on the bike. Plus that in turn wears out your tail bone early. I spent the later part of the day with my arms bent to compensate for it. I am told my new bars ship tomorrow.

          I didn't do diddly to the seat or tail piece today. No time. After riding it was lawn care time. But I'll do that most likely when my new bars come.

          All that said, it was a really good day and I think the bike looks better in person than it does in pictures. But thats me.

            Well, glad it was a good day! Now for reality. :twisted: If the engine is mechanically sound and the spark system is good, you've got some re-jetting to do.
            24/mpg is not right. And your other bike is worse. Pods and pipe don't knock the mileage down that far. It's more than just a matter of poor mileage and costing you gas money. You're going to have a nice thick layer of carbon building up, causing its own problems. And even if you think it's fast, running that rich is cutting the performance. Obviously it matters how hard the bike is ridden, but you should get "overall" mileage of at least lower 30's with correct jetting for those mods.
            Remember, you told me to speak up if I saw anything in your posts that does'nt seem right.
            And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
            Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

              no no no, this is good Keith, and I was going to wake that up anyway as I know it isn't right. You should have seen the tops of my pistons when we took them out 8O

              But alas, it is going to wait until one of my other bikes is road ready before I start learning how to rejet and setup carbs

                90% sports handle bar fairings produce a wobble geting up to the ton,
                lower handle bars will help stabilety, frame mounted fairings are allways better.

                    That seat misalignment happens to me too. It bends itself. Especially this winter I put a new Travelcade seat cover on and the thing bent like a bow and arrow. Must just be a quirk in the shape of the seat pan.

                      So it's the seat pan itself that is bent up like that? I was suspecting that because if you pull up on it the seat flexes really easy. My other one doesn't do that. I'll take a look at it.

                      I may need to post in the tech forum soon but I need to look harder first before I do. The oil leak under the bike seems to be stepping up the pace. Gonna have to find it. It was bad enough yesterday that it left a little spot in the driveway

                      Being an older bike I wouldn't say that it needs paper training as it got that many years ago. This is an old bike so this is a geriatric issue. It needs some Depends
