I had something similar with my sidecover around the post so before it broke clean off I put epoxy resin on the back. It's rock solid now. You could even use some wire mesh in the epoxy to help.

I found some 2-part epoxy at the local home store advertised to work with all plastics. It was about $3 for a double syringe -- plenty for several small repairs.
I just followed the directions and it worked great for repairing the broken post on my sidecover.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I have a little crack as well and was thinking of trying that "Shoo GOO" stuff because it isn't brittle. Bad idea? Should I just go with some epoxy on the back or would "SHOO GOO" work better or at all? That stuff is really strong and made for soles of shoes so I can't seeing it break or anything on a non-stressed part.

the 2 part epoxy works great. If you want to fix the side that shows and repaint you can sand along the crack to make a"v" then fill with body filler and sand. a dremel also works good for this but just be careful you don't grind too much

Side Cover Crack
I used something called "plastic metal" made by Bondo. It comes in a tube. Nothing to mix. It dries hard as a rock overnight and can be sanded and painted over. It's very easy to use. I got it at a Home Depot store.
