    rim polishing

    Hi all,
I have done a search on the subject, but other than powder coating, which i like, how do i get the aluminum part of my rims to shine again?

    Matt,

I went to home depot and bought a small drill mout, cup type wire wheel. I used this to remove all the paint and corrosion. Then used steel wool with Mother's mag polish, then 3M fine cut polishin compound. That's for the shiny part. That will keep you busy for a while.

You might also give Eagle 1 billet aluminum polish a try. I found it works very well, and requires a fraction of the work to make aluminum shine very bright.

My wheels are polished and gloss black powdercoated.
I learned to polish by visiting websites and just practicing. www.eastwood.com is who I bought all the buffs/compounds from. I recommend them.
If you want to see a close up of my wheels, visit my website. The wheels look even better in person. Just click the WWW symbol at the bottom of this post.
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

You should PM Wingnut (Bob). His 550L rims had a mirror finish on the them at the E/SE rally. Most of his metal surfaces had a mirror finish as a matter of fact. He spent all winter polishing his bike and has a great deal of info on the subject.

My rims on my 1150 were in good shape to begin with, but had stains on them, and what looked like clear coat peel. I used a drill with a polishing pad and regular ole' turtle wax rubbing compound, followed by Mother's mag polish by hand. They look brand new again.

I sand blasted mine and then shot clear coat over them. I love the look.

Any pics of your rims, Gary? I was thinking of going the same route so I'd love to see some already done.
