Forks--Kind of metal???

Hello, I am rather new to the motorcycle world. Just purchased an 83 GS1100gl last weekend. I was hoping that some of you can lend me some advise about shining up your forks and other parts that seem to be made of the same kind of metal. What kind of metal is the forks and crank case made of? They look the same and I noticed that they both are not magnetic.

I have a cloth that I use on my stainless steel revolvers called Lead-Clean Gun Cloth made by Pro-shot Products. This stuff is amazing at cleaning and shining. I was considering giving this product a try on my motorcycle, as my forks and crank cases are looking rather dull.

What say you guys?

Well, I got real impatient waiting for a reply so i went ahead and tried a nickel sized spot on the tire side of the left fork using that "Lead-Clean Gun Cloth". WOW, I only rubbed it for anout 5 seconds and it already has a mirror finish. The best part is that these cloths only cost $3.99, and they are a bit larger than a regular bandana. So one cloth should easily do all those parts.

The forks are made of aluminum...and they have a coating on them from the factory, which is why they turn black, fuzzy, etc. Once you clean them with heavy duty stuff you remove that coating and polish the bare metal. It's all good, but you have to continue to keep that metal polished and clean!

Where does one get these gun cloth thingys?

It's called Lead-Clean Gun Cloth made by Pro-shot Products. Call your local gun shops, one of them should carry it. If not, you can buy them directly from the maker(Pro-shot Products). You can order by phone or call and request a catalog. I just called them directly to pass on my testimonial, they sell them for $4/each.

Yes, I took the safety course....one of the wisest things I have ever done. And yes I have pretty strong legs and weigh 260. At 6'5" tall, me and the bike seem to fit one another pretty well.
