    Polishing

I polish anything metal I have been doing this from one of my first motorcycle tr 120 bonny dam that been 18 years ago started polishing at 16 years old my shop teacher gave me the basics on how to do this He said start from the roughest to the finest OH what a mistake....First off look at what you are going to polish ,clean any clear coat off with paint stripper,, than start with 600 grit and start sanding, use your hand, wooden stick ,air sanders,,,I use air tools with bits made up with rubber hose at the end and use sticky sandpaper and tear off little chunks put on there a let it rip, for the flat areas I make up my own pads 1 1/2 wide and use a exhaust pipe sharpened at the end as a cutter. Next look at the metal after you sand it use water and a rag look to see if the oxidation is still there if it is go to a rougher grit to get it out,,, Than start using finer grits.. I go up to 800grit but my airtools spins so fast that it changes it to about 1500grit. Now that you got it sanded you need to buff the area with wax rough, what is rough its a wax with very fine grit in it there is different grades here finest red, white, brown ,or green , black which is the roughts I only use white rough I have a buffer that spins a cotton buffing pad at 3600 rpm with 10in pads on it the machine cost around $500.00 dollars...But I cant use this machine on everything I use grinder and put on 4in pads from sears, or use those rods with the rubber on the end with shop rags cut in 1in strips NEW rags not old ones and wrap it around the tool put the rough on them and start pushing the end into the metal remember that pushing to hard will make that bit come thru and hit what you are doing...REMEMBER power tool spin one way if they catch a coner or edge it will come out of you hand make it succured you can be hurt or killed look how the tool spins on the metal """make the tool spin off """,,, NOT ON or it will tear up the pad ,come out of you hands or break the tool.. AFTER you turn dirty and black put on the polish and rub it in with the rag ,it will turn black which is good with another rag wipe it off and look at it you should see your self and everything around you GOOD if you see haze around you Keep rubbing on it with the polish it will come out...I found a liquid polish that I perfer to use called "MFX" in a white bottle at T&A truckstop ""TRANS AMERICA "" That works better than any other I have ever used....I have to travel about 250mile in order get it great excuss for a road trip Ha Ha.... I like to clean my parts a couple of times before putting it back on it just make sure that the polish penetrats in to the metal. YOU WILL HAVE TO CLEAN IT TO PROTECT IT the more times you put on the polish the easirer it is each time to clean it . IF NOT YOU WILL HAVE TO DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN . or for me I get paid again!!!! Look at my site with my pictures the frame is polished, the front forks and ends of the forks polished , the triple tree is polished than powdercoated translusant red or see thru red... http://community.webshots.com/user/drewshotrodding

Interesting technique. So far I've only tried it the way your shop teacher tried to teach you. I'll have to try it your way next time. Thanks for the thread.
