    GS850 Seat Interchangability

    Hello all,
I'm trying to buy a new seat for my 1982 GS850G. What other years and models of GS have a seat that will fit right onto my bike without any modification? Any difference between US/UK/International? I'm hunting for a step-up/king-queen seat and am not finding crap...

    Thanks in advance,
    Ed

    GS seat

Hi, I had some issues with the stock seat myself three years ago when I rescued my 1982 850G. The seat was in very good condition, but I didn't like the shape so much. I also looked around for aftermarket and even went to a large boneyard outside of Minneapolis and looked around. Decided I couldn't afford to have one custom made, but I might get mine modified to fit me better. I went to a local custom upholstery shop and inquired if they could recover and reshape and how much. They said $100.00 and they did that kind of thing all the time. The stock seat has an external line or bead on each side. I had the customizer reshape the seat to follow the shape/contour of that, and in a week I had it back. I has a more scalloped shape but not too severe, still giving plenty of comfort. I am very happy with the outcome. Give this a thought. Good luck!

as long as you have a good base on your seat, it's not too hard a job to peel back the vinyl and carve some of the foam off. you can do it in stages until you get the shape you like best. hardest part is stretching the top back on.you can secure it with rivets or small self-tappers...b.b.

Just bumping this post, as I'm also curious what other model/year seats will fit on the 1982 GS850GL. I'll get pics of my project bike up at some point, but it'll be painfully obvious to all that the seat will neet replacing or rebuilding. I'm looking at a source that claims to have "GS750 & GS850, 1978-1984 NOS seat" which looks great, but I'm a little skeptical about such a universal application. Any way to be sure?

We just got a double-bucket seat for our 850GL from Travelcade. http://www.saddlemen.com/olderseats.html It took two tries as the first one did not have good stitching around the key grommet at the back, and they had moved the bucket forward about 2 inches. Even my short wife (it's HER bike) did not appreciate that move. Sent it back to have the cover re-done and the bucket moved back. It was back to me in about 2 weeks. There was no charge for the re-work, and I seem to remember an initial price of about $150, their site does not say.

You can see pictures of this bike in the GS gallery. '82 GS850GL, owner is Steve. It is a blue and silver bike with a few accessories. \\/
