Sissy Clamp?
My backrest was attatched by 4 plastic straps to the back rack when I bought it.

At minimum, someone would need to know the brand of your backrest and rack. A picture would be very helpful, too, especially if you want ideas for a workaround.
There were several companies that made racks for UJMs in the 70s and 80s, so we'll need more info in order to get someone with the same rack to speak up.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Ah, I didn't think to look at the link in your sig!
I don't have that sort of rack, but I'd swear I've seen a few like that. I know JonR, for one, has a nifty sliding backrest dealie on his 750. I think the tubes on his backrest actually fit inside tubes on the rack, so it may be quite different.
Let's post those pictures inline and see if anyone recognizes these parts:
