    Dented 1000s tank restore

022gXM.jpg Got the dented tank back from my guy today. I would say about 99 percent good to go but i always expect theres gonna be some body work to be done. See the link from the for sale thread for the before pics. The decal set has been ordered. This is gonna be an AS I GET TIME project but its off to a good start.

What do you think so far Mark??

I have a the original gas tank from a 1980 GS1000S Wes Coolry with some significant dents in it. Before I trash it I thought I'd check if anyone on here has any use for it. Let me know

well i dont know how to make them bigger. The photo entire photo share thing went to schitz after the "UPGRADE". Wish admin would put it back the way it was AND restore the 10 pics to a post feature

I don't know how big the original pics you have are, but I run a forum, and I advise my users to use XNViewMP to resize all their pictures. It will remove all the metadata, and create the same size picture, but at a much smaller kb size, as the superfluous data, not the image, is changed. It's free, I've been using it for over 15 years. Free for personal use. It costs money to run a forum, and pictures take memory. If the forum barely supports itself, the size of the picture in data and size must be reduced.

To help the forum out, using this program will reduce picture data size, but you can keep a big picture. It allows so much picture manipulation, it's amazing it's free. My forum relies on pictures, 10 per post, and everyone uses this program so they can post 10 pics, but use the minimal amount of space needed to host it.

XnView, one of the best and popular image viewer. It allows you to view, manage, resize and edit your photos.

In anticipation of decals arrivig soon today i sanded along the original decals to expose the borders of the blue and white. The plan is use an engraver to scribe the borders before fully stripping tank. This should show through the primer and allow me to lay the decals exactly along the factory lines/ L east thats my :"plan"for now

EDIT.. Rethought the engraver method. What im gonna do is mask off the blue from the white and shoot it with primer and let it dry. Then mask off the primed blue area and shoot the white area with a different color primer. This will establish the line for the decals AND for the colors. Then all ill need to do is sand the paint lines down and cover tem with the decals.

I will take pics as i go

What's your plans for the tank, Chuck..? Repair for re-sale, or use it on one of your own bikes..?

Cant really say as of now Larry. Ill probably have 350 to 400 into it when done. Ireally dont know what i would ask for it seeing its a true Cooley tank. May sock it away and use as a bartering piece one day. What do you think i can realistically get for it???

Because of the rarity of a true S tank, fully restored in and out, I would think $900 would be fair for all parties concerned. Maybe more. I used to charge $800 just to re-paint an S tank. Materials prices have more then doubled since then.
