GS Seat compatibilty

i know this has prolly been covered somewhere around here, but i can't seem to find it....

is there a type of chart or way to see what GS seats are compatible w/ other GS'?

I have a 80' 850L and the seat pan is in very bad shape, I have re-upholsterd it, but it just does not look as good as original.
will a seat from a 750 L work on a 850 L? or perhaps a different year 850 seat like a '79 or '81-82??

I'm also looking for compatible seat pans for my 78 GS750E. I want to eventually come up with a cafe racer style seat, but don't want to start hacking on my current seat without a backup plan. Hehe...
