    Rear fender elimination?

I just sent everything on my bike out for paint today, and I was thinking about trying to remove my rear fender.

The bike is an 81 gs450e pictured below:

I'm going with a really simple paint scheme. Just gloss black with two 1" white stripes (paint, not stickers) 3/4" apart going down the top of the tank and tail section.

I was thinking removing the rear fender would make for a cleaner look. I realize I would have to come up with a way to mount turn signals and a tail light.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Charles

I really like the looks of this taillight:

I just need some ideas of how to mount it.

I did exactly that with my '83 650G. I just cut the fender flush with the frame, straight back to the back. I then took a piece of 1/8 strap and bent 2 90 degree tabs on the end to where it would actually slide between the rear frame rails where they flatten out. I welded that to the frame and used the holes in the flattened part of the frame to mount the turn signals (the signals also hold up what is left of the fender under the tail).

I then got the LED TRI-LITE (clear) from flyncycle and mounted it to the strap of steel between the frame rails. Then took 2 washers and welded them to the strap steel at 45 degree angles to mount the license plate.

It looks wonderful and clean, I have had a few local guys tell me it looks really good and makes the bike look cleaner.

I will try and get some pics uploaded.

My 650 G has a fender extention that I think looks stupid. I have two spare fenders I plan to play with this winter to try something new with. I don't want a radical mod, I just want a cleaner look to the fender.

I got a fender elliminator/licence plate bracket kit for my gs1150es that does that , I really like it , I bent a piece of aluminum bar stock and bolted it up inside to the frame where the old fender mounted and then bolted the plate holder kit to that , the signals mount on the end of the kit bracket, and I got the small signal lights and got rid of my monster signal lights , I put the small signals on the front of the bike as well , pretty easy job , I've seen the kits at most bike shops-

I see these micro turn signals a lot. While they look cool they don't seem to be as effective. My first concern is hving a driver see my signal and also know which way I am going to go. Some of them actually pay attention when they drive.

I plan on doing the same thing with my GS650G, I just need to get around to it. This winter I plan to replace O rings in the carbs, fix a few oil leaks, and tweak the cosmetics a bit. Fender elimination is on the list

I don't think i want turn signals that small, but i don't really want to stick with the GIGANTIC ones on there already... I'm kind of having a hard time deciding what to get.

I am using the mini cat eyes from flyncycle, they are pretty darn bright. They are as bright if not brighter than my buddies stock turn signals on his brand new saki.

What was the brand of the kit? I went to my local moto place and they didn't have a fender eliminator kit for the GS1000.
